About this spotlight

With the tradition of home visits and pre-entry groups long gone, the teachers at Trengrove Kindergarten were looking for a simple way to support children and families through the early days of settling into session by building relationships between kindergarten and home. This spotlight highlights the positive results of providing a digital camera to children and families who are transitioning into kindergarten.

Kidsfirst Kindergartens Trengrove is situated in the North West area of Christchurch and is licensed for 45 children in both morning and afternoon sessions. In 2009, almost a quarter of children attending are from families where English is not the first language spoken at home. The kindergarten community is diverse culturally, socially and economically, demonstrated by the two closest neighbouring schools having a decile rating at both ends of the spectrum: Aorangi Primary School, decile 3, and Fendalton Primary School, decile 10.
