About this spotlight
When teachers at Mayfield Kindergarten in Blenheim began sending home movie episodes of children’s learning on DVD, they were hoping to increase parent/whānau involvement at kindergarten. This aim was achieved, but the unexpected outcome was the positive effect on parents’ understanding of their children’s learning.
Centre: Mayfield Kindergarten
This long-established decile 3 kindergarten provides ECE services for the suburb of Mayfield, Blenheim, and surrounding rural areas. The kindergarten community is diverse, both culturally and structurally. The roll caters for 40 children in a daily mixed-age, four-hour morning session. Three days each week the twenty oldest children stay on for afternoon sessions that focus on extension work. The programme incorporates planned and emergent elements and aims to extend children’s individual interests to enhance their learning and development.
