Recognition of prior learning

Introduction

The government introduced a number of initiatives to help people who wish to become qualified ECE teachers and to meet the new qualification requirements, where by 2012 all staff working in ECE teacher-led services will need to hold a Diploma of Teaching (ECE) or an equivalent level 7 qualification.  One of these initiatives is the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Programme.

This page explains how you can apply to have your current skills and knowledge recognised under an RPL programme.

Contracted RPL Providers

As of July 2008 the Ministry of Education holds contracts with four teacher education providers to offer one free (to the applicant) RPL assessment for students wishing to enter into the Diploma of Teaching (ECE) or an equivalent degree.  The three providers are:

  • Manukau Institute of Technology
  • University of Canterbury College of Education
  • Te Tari Puna Ora O Aotearoa / NZ Childcare Association
  • The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand*
